When life throws you in hot water, you can choose to be a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean.
A carrot becomes soft and pliable, giving in to the adversity, giving up.
The egg hardens and refuses to confrom.
The coffee bean, however, turns the water into a steaming, flavorful drink.
When adversity strikes, choose to make coffee.

Pickle People
Recently I volunteered at our local hospital. The occasion was a celebration for the 2000 hospital employees. The celebration theme was a carnival and there were games, caricatures, a dunking booth, a rock climbing wall, and plenty of food in the serving line. It was a typically hot, July day with temperatures in the 100’s.

Sunday Scripture
But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day! Habakkuk 2:3

I’ve Been Down Here Before
“This guy’s walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can’t get out.
“A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, ‘Hey you. Can you help me out?’ The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on.
“Then a priest comes [...]

Exposed Roots
We went kayaking on Lake Superior, where I recall seeing trees hanging from cliffs with their roots totally exposed. I commented to the other woman in my kayak, “Trees aren’t supposed to live like that, with their roots all exposed to the elements, hanging from the edge of a cliff. But the will to survive [...]

My Perfect Imaginary Garden
Did you ever have an imaginary friend when you were growing up? I asked this question to some friends this week and one friend said, “I still do!”
Well, if I had an imaginary garden this would be it:
What about you? Do you have an imaginary garden picture to share?

How To Stop Being a Big Baby
“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving.” —Dale Carnegie
All the rationalizations do not seem to work when I try to “help” a complainer. “Help” is in quotation marks because it was/is my intention but it is not perceived as such.
It is perceived by [...]

Why am I afraid to tell you who I am?
Why am I afraid to tell you who I am? Because if I tell you who I am, and you don’t like me, I’m in for it. It can be frightening to tell you who I am.
Fear does three terrible things to relationships:
1. Fear makes us defensive. We’re afraid to reveal ourselves. We defend ourselves. [...]

Preparing for the Holiday
There is a mighty cloud of witnesses watching you. They are looking for something in you that is worth passing along to the next generation.
They aren’t listening for words; they are looking to see what you do.
Are you aware of this Google search inside your soul? You are being watched. There is a mighty cloud [...]
